Collaboration with Monash Student Association (MSA) Welfare

21st October 2021

Last year BAP Monash partnered with MSA ESJ in their #WeCanDoBetter series and this year we have partnered with MSA Welfare to create a series of posts to be distributed on both our and their social media platforms over the SWOTVAC period.

Our posts are focused on the topic of exam preparation with tips for mental health.

R U OK Day Trivia
9 September 2021

n recognition of R U OK Day, we hosted a Trivia Night yesterday evening in collaboration with Beta Alpha Psi - Xi Lambda, University of Melbourne. The event was a great success that fostered connections between the members of the two Chapters and ignited our competitive spirits.

It was also an opportunity for us to take a break from the pressure of university deadlines and turn our minds to the important issue of Mental Health Awareness. From the evening, we learned that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year and that 50% of mental health problems are established by age 14.

This post is a friendly reminder for our members to take a moment today to ask someone "are you OK?" because a conversation could change a life.

Mental Health First Aid Course 2021

30th October 2021

On 30th October, BAP members completed a Standard Mental Health First Aid course under the guidance of Shyma Fuad. The course was held over two sessions and was twelve hours long, with the aim of teaching people how to assist adults experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.

After completing the course and receiving the certification, our members have officially become Standard Mental Health First Aiders and can help in situations until the mental health crisis is resolved or professional help is received.

We would like to thank Shyma Fuad and Mental Health First Aid Australia for accommodating us despite the lockdown in shifting the second half of the course online. The course taught our members so much about mental health and helping others.

Monash Run for Refugees 2021

18 July 2021

On the 18th of July, BAP Monash participated in Run for Refugees, held online for the second year in support of Humanitarian scholarships. Participants set a step or kilometre goal which they walked or ran.

Whilst not physically together and scattered across Melbourne due to the current lockdown, it was amazing to see members supporting each other and the cause as everyone tracked their movement towards and completion of their personal goal.

Thank you to the BAP members and wider Monash University community that participated for not only raising awareness but in fundraising and showing continual support during active in April and Run for Refugees.

Resiliency with Headspace

30 April 2021

Last Friday was our resilience event with Headspace, where our members gained insight into building and maintaining resilience by starting healthy habits and mindsets. It was an absolute privilege for our members to hear from Jane Darvall and Elaine Leibetrau on adversity, bouncing back and managing perfectionism.

Resilience is an especially important topic for our members as they go through recruitment and life in general, as being able to protect oneself, bounce back and see these hurdles as opportunities for personal growth will allow them better able to face the future by managing their energy not just their time.

Thank you to Headspace for your time and insight.

Understanding Mental Health

10 September 2020

In recognition of the importance of mental wellbeing and the acknowledgement of R U OK Day, our chapter held a workshop to further our understanding of issues surrounding mental health.

The session was run by Monash Mental Health Program Senior Coordinator and Psychologist Chris Jenkin, who discussed a variety of subtopics including the impacts of impaired mental health, possible signs and symptoms of a mental health issue, and ways to approach discussions surrounding mental health to help those around us in need.

Overall, the session was incredibly insightful and provided us with invaluable knowledge which will remain with us in years to come. A massive thank you to Chris for leading the session.

Mindfulness and Wellbeing Workshop

27 August 2020

On Thursday August 27th, our chapter and the BAP UniMelb chapter collaborated with Pitcher Partners to hold a Mindfulness and Wellbeing workshop. Led by mindfulness and meditation teacher Kumbi Mukaro, the workshop encouraged participants to tune in to their bodies and minds, and provided great insight into the importance of self-care in achieving a balanced being.

A huge thank you to Kumbi for running the session, and to Stephanie Kish for organising the event!

Run for Refugees 2020

This year, our chapter supported Monash Runs for Refugees in their aim to raise funds for Humanitarian Scholarships. Our members eagerly participated in R4R's Move it in May campaign, where they took part in weekly challenges and uploaded their results to social media to raise awareness for the cause. As a result of their efforts, the BAP team raised over $2,500!

On the 26th of July, members participated in this year's solo version of the Run, which required participants to reach a step goal tracked via an app. A huge thank you to all of our members for their support, and to Monash R4R for organising this incredible fundraiser!

Letters to Healthcare Workers

While we have been limited in our capacity to hold physical service events, our goal of supporting and connecting with our community remains. Identifying the importance of their services, our chapter wanted to acknowledge the courageous and tireless efforts of the healthcare workers in our community. We compiled over 35 letters, poems, and drawings completed by our members, to send to Monash medical workers and show our gratitude for their incredible commitment and resilience through this period.

Monash x UniMelb Zoom Yoga

11 May 2020

On Monday May 11th, BAP Monash and UniMelb members rolled out their yoga mats and got their stretch on for Zoom yoga! The session provided a much needed break from mid-semester exam study, and reminded us of the importance of maintaining our mental health and wellbeing during these uncertain times. A huge thank you to Lisa Matthews for running the session!

BAP Leadership Day 2019

30 September 2019

On the first day of our BAP Leadership Day event, members had the privilege to volunteer at Life's Little Treasures for two shifts, 2-3 hours each. Members started their shift learning about what Life's Little Treasures does as a not for profit organisation, providing support and education for families with premature or sick children. The rest of the shift was spent packing "Little Bags of Calm", mindfulness kits for the families to exercise much-needed self care. Tasks included sticking teabags onto card, packing pocket hearts into plastic bags and preparing Milestone cards for families to celebrate milestones with their child.

All members truly enjoyed the experience giving back to the community, and it was great to spend time getting to know students from BAP UniMelb too!

A huge thank you to the Committee members of BAP Monash and UniMelb who made this wholesome event possible.

R U OK Day 2019

12 September 2019

BAP members had the opportunity to volunteer at Monash Caulfield Campus with activities for R U OK Day, raising awareness about mental health and the small steps we can take to care for the people around us.

We held a fundraising BBQ for the R U OK Day foundation, and ran activities at the Basketball courts for students to have fun shooting some hoops, enjoying the company of friends and the benefits of playing sport on mental health.

Open Day at Monash University

4 August 2019

Monash University Campuses were bustling with prospective students exploring their opportunities to study at Monash. Our members took the opportunity to volunteer for the day at the Business and Economics marquees and Accounting stalls to speak to students and parents with questions about studying Accounting at Monash. Our Vice-President, Emma Tibballs also had the privilege of being on the panel of a packed-out presentation by the Monash Business School about Business, with a Global Perspective. We thank all the students who volunteered their time to promote the study of Accounting at Monash and took the time to answer the questions of keen students approaching a new exciting stage of study in Tertiary Education.

Accounting Week 2019

29 July - 1 August 2019

From the 29 of July to the 1st of August, the Department of Accounting held the annual Accounting Week, where members across BAP and the wider Monash Community participated in many sessions and events.

It kicked off on Monday night with the Accounting Week Launch and Alumni Academic Awards. It was great to see all of the research project posters on display and listen to Mathew Nelson's interesting insights, through his keynote speech. Congratulations again to the recipients of the Alumni Awards, Kim Langfield-Smith and Warren McGregor.

Tuesday began with everyone braving the cold morning at Caulfield Campus, for the Master of the Calculator Competition. The BAP members assisted in the morning and everyone in attendance was amazed by the speed and skill of all the participants. A massive congratulations to Geoffrey for taking home first place this year. CPA Australia also held their Profession Session, "Be Seen Get Hired" on Tuesday. We all heard from some amazing speakers, who shared their experiences and offered some useful advice on networking and interviews, among many other things.

Wednesday started with the Accounting Week Case Study Competition for VCE students. Here, the students from various high schools pitched their ideas about ways to improve a tea business based on a case study. Many BAP members and academics were in attendance to watch the incredible presentations. Congratulations to all of the teams on their wonderful presentations! In the afternoon, the Amazing Accounting Race began with BAP members assisting in the running of the event. It was a lot of fun to see all the teams unscramble their puzzle pieces and attempt tough accounting questions at different locations across the Clayton Campus.

A big congratulations to the Department of Accounting, the organising team, and everyone involved, for such a fun-filled and interesting week, filled with activities and sessions! We look forward to a bigger Accounting Week next year!

Accounting Week 2018

3-6 September 2018

The dynamic four day program of the Department of Accounting's inaugural Accounting week was a great opportunity for BAP members to celebrate and promote the study of Accounting at Monash.

The Department of Accounting invited industry figures, alumni, advisory committee members, and academic staff to the launch of Accounting Week 2018, celebrating past successes and look to exciting challenges that lay ahead.

On Tuesday,  students got to participate in the CPA Profession Session 'Be Seen, Get Hired'.

Many members supported the Department by assisting in the many fun events held on Wednesday and Thursday:

  • The finals of the student Case Competition designed for students studying VCE Units 1 - 4 Accounting or International Baccalaureate Business and Management in Victoria

  • T-shirt Design Competition

  • The Amazing Accounting Race

  • The Master of the Calculator Competition.

Altogether it was an extremely successful inaugural  Accounting Week and the Department looks forward to working with the Monash Beta Alpha Psi chapter to bring together another Accounting Week next year in 2019.

R U OK DAY? - Yoga and Barbecue

14 September 2017

In conjunction with the R U OK DAY? Foundation, Beta Alpha Psi was proud to bring members a day of mindfulness, food and fun with two yoga sessions followed by a barbecue and drinks.

It was a fantastic way to relieve the stress of week 8 and socialise with fellow members. The Xi Epsilon Chapter raised over $200 for this great cause.
