BAP Graduation 2019

28 November 2019

On the 28th of November, we welcomed our new BAP members while celebrating the new alumnus of Beta Alpha Psi Xi Epsilon.

We were fortunate enough to have Josh Farr from Campus Consulting as our keynote speaker. We gained massive insights and new perspectives into leadership as he shared 6 Leadership Lessons to Leave a Legacy. Josh challenged everyone to look beyond traditional pathways of our careers, step out of our comfort zones and aim for opportunities which align with our values.

The head of the Department of Accounting, Carla Wilkin awarded graduating members their graduation certificates and, according to tradition, quizzed each member interesting questions about their time in BAP. There was much laughter and a great mood of celebration. Altogether it was a wholesome night and the 2019 Committee offers their wholehearted congratulations to the BAP Class of 2019 who are now joining our international network of alumni. We wish them all the best with their future careers and look forward to seeing where life takes them.

BAP Leadership Day 2019

1 October 2019

The second day of the BAP Leadership Day event was jam packed with brilliant speakers and presenters as well as interactive workshops and time for our members to network and socialise with the guests and the members of BAP UniMelb.

Centred around the theme of Diversity and Inclusion, the day started off with a presentation from EY representatives Derek Li, Claudia Riseborough, & Kirsten Callander about D&I at EY. The morning session concluded with an Equality and Inclusion interactive workshop where Nick McGuigan, Lisa Powell and Alessandro Ghio got the members to create "Unboxing Videos", expressing in a creative and hands-on way how diversity can be encouraged in teams.

A hearty lunch was catered for all attendees by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, followed by sessions about Neurodiversity by Andrew Eddy & Chris Turner and Supporting Indigenous Australians in the Workplace by Richard Hurst.

The last speaker session was a vibrant and interactive session about Gender Equality by Helen Babb which sparked lots of interesting conversations amongst members.

The day concluded with an informative panel with Elliot Batiste, Brent Patterson and Mangala Prasetia about the upcoming Best Practices and Project Run With It competitions coming up in the BAP calendar next year.

The committee members from BAP Monash as well as BAP UniMelb put many hours into this extremely successful and engaging event, and all members convey their gratitude to their hard work!

MYOB Workshop

17 September 2019

by Emma Tibballs

MYOB's Justin Scholten and Elliott Jacobs facilitated an engaging workshop for the members at BAP Monash focusing on the key software skills required by the accountants of tomorrow. Members got to follow along on their own devices due to the interactive nature of the workshop. From the way technology provides accountants new ways to add value to FinTech trends to the future of work and the increase in data analytics and advisory services, members learned about how to be more effective with software and useful skills to develop.

Connections in Professions Workshop

4 September 2019

We were honoured to have Matt Gaffney host an insightful panel discussion with industry professionals from a variety of firms: PKF, Westpac and Hall & Wilcox. The panel included Ken Weldin, Emma Rockey, Natalie Frazer, James Do, Frank Hinoporos and Nhu-Thuy Ding. The panellists shared their experiences of undergoing major career changes and pivots in their journies as a professional, and generously gave advice about the most important skills for graduates to develop in order to excel in a rapidly changing business world.  The night concluded with our members having the opportunity to ask the panellists questions, mingle and network with them. We thank Ellen Hawkins for putting together such an incredibly inspiring and enjoyable event for all our members.

Young Coders AU Coding Workshop

We were privileged to have Kruti and Amandeep from Young Coders Australia come to Monash Caulfield Campus to teach us how to code a website using HTML, CSS and Javascript! Many members had fun creating their own practice webpages, developing their Tech skills and gaining a better understanding about the programming languages behind an effective website.

Beta Alpha Psi Oceania Regional Meeting 2019

26 - 28 April 2019

From the 26th - 28th of April, our chapter hosted the Oceania Regional Meeting for 2019. It was a marvellous event and it was great to see months worth of planning and preparation come together over the weekend! We had some amazing speakers and workshops over the course of the Meeting. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Andrew van Dinter from EY, Roddy McNeil from Xero, Tiago Devesa from McKinsey and Matt Gaffney the Director of Enindico, who were very engaging and provided all participants with some interesting insights into their prospect fields and careers.

The Best Practices competition ran on Saturday, and our chapter presented in all three topics - Roots, Branches and Shade. Congratulations to everyone that presented - they were all terrific, and it was interesting to hear from the other chapters about their unique events. A massive congratulations to Ellen Hawkins and Oliver Holberton, who placed 3rd in their category of Shade.

On Sunday, the members from across the Oceania Region went to CERES Joe's Market Garden in Coburg. Here, all the attendees got their hands dirty while assisting with the maintenance of the garden. A special thanks to Farmer Emily and Remi for teaching us the ins and out of urban farming and the importance behind fair trade and organic goods.

Finally, this weekend would not have been possible without the efforts of some amazing people. These include Melinda Merson, the Events Coordinator for the Monash Business School, faculty Advisors Daniela Juric and John Webster, who put in a lot of effort into the planning and executing of the Meeting, and Professor Carla Wilkins, whose support of the program over the last few years has been incredible.

Networking Event with EY

 21 March 2019

Our networking night with EY Australia concluded our Mega Networking Week and a busy few weeks of events! It was a great event which provided valuable insights about the firm and the application process, along with a couple of tips and tricks for applications. We also had the opportunity to talk to representatives and hear about employees’ experiences working in tax-driven sectors, which was very eye-opening.

McGrathNicol Information Session

20 March 2019

On the second day of our mega networking week,  the members of Beta Alpha Psi headed out to McGrathNicol's offices to network and find out more the opportunities available at the boutique accounting firm. It was a very insightful night as members had the opportunity to find out more about the Forensic, Restructuring, Transactions and Advisory service lines through a creative rotational program of information sessions! Members also got to interact with and meet students from ASA from the University of Melbourne.

Exclusive Networking Night with Grant Thornton

19 March 2019

In an exclusive event only available to BAP members, some of our BAP members had the privilege of visiting Grant Thornton to meet with firm representatives. It was a great night which offered our members the opportunity to find out more about the inner workings of the firm and network with representatives. It was interesting to learn more about all the service lines available, and how they are often working alongside each other to assist clients. Members also got the fantastic opportunity to catch up with one of the pioneers of our Chapter, Morgan Stevens! It is such a privilege to have a great relationship with Grant Thornton and have so many alumni from BAP find graduate work there.

CA Employment Evening

14 March 2019

CA's Employment Evening was an evening buzzing with excitement. Several members of BAP got VIP access to the event venue to network with over 200 employers and exhibitors from Big Four, mid tiers and smaller firms - earlier than the rest of the crowds of students.

BAP members participated in interesting speaker sessions with topics like "Will robots take over my job?", Personal Branding & Networking.

It was such a great opportunity to rub shoulders with Accounting students from various universities from all over the state of Victoria and network with them as well as learn about the CA program. Many BAP members also had the chance to take professional LinkedIn profile pictures and take part in mock interviews with representatives from the different firms present.

KPMG Networking Event

6 March 2019

The year of professional events started off with a bang with our very first Networking Event with KPMG! With 2019 being the first year BAP Xi Epsilon has been able to partner with KPMG, our members had the unprecedented opportunity to visit the state of the art newly renovated KPMG facilities in Docklands.

We learnt about the KPMG recruitment process from graduate recruiter Aahrabie and had the chance to ask questions about the process and about the opportunities KPMG provides for vacationers and graduates who are successful in landing roles in the firm.

Following the presentation, members were given time to network and chat to representatives from the KPMG External Audit Team.
